Preparing images for uploading to your teaching file:
In order to include images in your teaching file you must be able to access them from your
hard drive, so the issue becomes getting the image(s) from the image modality
to the hard drive. This process is dependent on your institutions
equipment and protocal regarding the storage of images.
In some cases the modality itself has an export function which allows you to save the image(s) directly to your hard drive. If your institution uses a PACS system you may be able to export directly from the PACS to the hard drive. If your PACS system does not allow for this then you can push the images from the PACS to a Dicom Workstation which does facilitate exporting to local hard drives. If your institution does not have a PACS system you still should be able to push images from a modality to a Dicom Workstation. There are two ways to get images off a Dicom Workstation, you can use screen capture software to save images to your hard drive or DICOM Client software to export images to your hard drive. For both options you must be working from a PC based station and your institution must allow 3rd party software to be installed. |

Dicom Workstations: Screen capture software: If you are going to use the screen capture method choose between two software options, 20/20 (free screen capture and image-viewer application) or Snag-It (one time user fee for deluxe screen-capture utility). IN ORDER TO USE SCREEN CAPTURE YOU MUST BE WORKING FROM A PC BASED STATION AND YOUR INSTITUTION MUST ALLOW 3RD PARTY SOFTWARE TO BE INSTALLED. To use 20/20: Download the free version from: www.hotfreeware.com Open 20/20 after it has been installed on your PC and go to File>Preferences>Capture and select a 'Capture Key' from the drop down menu. View on your monitor the image(s) you want to include in your teaching file. Press your 'Capture Key' and you should be able to move a mapping icon with your mouse. Move the mapping icon to a corner of the area you want to capture. (TRY NOT TO INCLUDE PATIENT ID INFORMATION, See "How do I create an overlap for Patient ID Information?") Click the left mouse button and keep it held down. Drag the mouse until the desired size has been achieved. Release the mouse button. The selected area has been captured. 20/20 will display the captured image. Go to File>Save As and save the captured image as JPEG file on your hard drive. The image is now available to be uploaded into your teaching file. (See "How do I add images to a case I just created?" or "How do I add more images?") DICOM Client software: We suggest eFilm Workstation (full-featured image viewing and manipulation system). |
