User Guide: Filter-based Search Tips

You can easily use the text field and filter dropdowns to intuitively perform deep searches of cases. There are even more powerful ways to dig out exactly the results you need.

Simple text searches

Cases are found based on the frequency of meaningful search terms within the corpus of cases. Results will be based on any matches of any of the terms.

pulmonary carburetor for example will likely match cases even if there are no carburetors to be found.

Exact text searches

Just put your query in quotes. Using “pulmonary carburetor” for example again. If entered in quotation marks, no cases will be found because the exact string doesn’t, one hopes, exist in any case.

Non-contiguous text with all terms matched

Add a plus before any term that must be present in results. E.g., +kidney +ectopic.

Add an AND (case insensitive) between terms you want required. E.g., spleen AND hilar AND somatostatin.

Negated text searches

Put a minus before any term you want to exclude. E.g., heart -large -enlarge will whittle down your search results considerably.

Title or text only

Use the field name: (note the colon) to constrain the search to that field. To search only titles try title:cardiomyopathy. To search only case text try text:metatarsal.

Complex queries

Group queries with balanced parentheses. Mix the syntax we already covered. Here are some examples. Happy hunting!
