070918 CONGENITAL HERPES SIMPLEX TYPE I INFECTION

Patient: 13 day old male

History: Prematurity with gestational age 35+6 weeks.
Birthbody weight: 2670gm.

Findings:

MRI of brain:
1. Volume reduction of left cerebral hemisphere with mild
   enlargement of left surface sulci and cisterns, suggesting
   mild-moderate brain atrophy or abnormal brain development.
2. Mild dilatation of left lateral ventricle without
   periventricular interstitial edema, in favor of ex vacuo
   ventricular dilatation secondary to cerebral volume reduction.

Impression:
1. Volume reduction of left cerebrum with ex vacuo left ventricular
dilatation, may due to brain atrophy or abnormal development.

Diagnosis: Congenital herpes simplex type I infection
(HSV I IgM:positive)
