MyPACS Used for Educational Outreach in Radiology and Medicine

MyPACS is increasingly being used for educational outreach in developing nations. The Society of Pediatric Radiology has adopted MyPACS as the core platform to support a formal international outreach endeavor. Under a pilot project, physicians in developing nations are invited to upload pediatric cases to MyPACS that they may lack expertise to diagnose. An e-mail alert is then sent to an SPR mailing list of volunteer SPR radiologists, who can respond with educational opinions. SPR expects this form of direct person to person case sharing to accelerate the spread of radiologic expertise to developing nations, resulting in improved healthcare worldwide. If successful, SPR will extend participation to its entire membership.

"MyPACS appears to be a great platform for this, because it offers a user friendly interface for uploading cases, a high-quality viewer for evaluating cases, and an alert system that automatically sends e-mails to volunteers whenever someone is soliciting opinions on a case that matches their expertise," said Dr. Sarah J. Chilton, chair of SPR's International Outreach Committee.

Developing World Medical And Radiology Educational Outreach: Exchanging Images, Videos And Audio, Opinions And Educational Content Over The Internet

Objectives:

1. Discuss how virtual international radiology and medical outreach and education in the developing world can be securely performed utilizing the Internet.
2. Describe how medical personnel use www.mypacs.net to offer assistance to physicians in developing nations.
3. Explain an e-mail alert feature that notifies volunteer radiologists and other physicians when a care giver in the developing world solicits an opinion.
4. Introduce educational tools and supporting resources that enable the ability to create opportunities to enhance care in secondary and tertiary hospitals in North America, Europe and rural clinics without need of long distance travel.
5. Demonstrate videos on telepathology imaging, live consult, and real time telemedicine.
